It’s remarkable the conversations we’ve had recently about what makes the perfect present. Everyone has a slightly different opinion.

One important realisation that came to us is the importance of context. My friend Sally received a Monty Python DVD from her (now ex-) boyfriend. She loves Monty Python but was disappointed to receive this particular DVD. It wasn’t because she already owned it so… why? Because her boyfriend didn’t know she liked Monty Python and had picked it up at the last minute from the bargain bin in HMV!

If the DVD had come from her brother then that would have been fine. But from her boyfriend? Disappointing.

Let’s take this to the extreme. Imagine receiving lingerie from your uncle at Christmas. No matter how nice the lingerie is it’s just an inappropriate gift. Creepy! (Even worse if you’re a bloke.)
